DECK

Module 2
Reflection
A deck for sitting, watching, chatting

For the second module, we were tasked to layout a 36sqm single level deck that relates to the brick wall and is no larger than an A3 sheet when drawn at 1-20. The finished height of the platform is at 600mm high while providing at least 150mm clearance to the underside of bearers to reduce timber decay.

In this module, I learned to consider the material's quality in designing the structure, which timber could rot when moisture control is not addressed properly. The material affected the detailing of the design such as having gaps to allow water flowing away from the timber structure and also using reinforced concrete stumps to prevent timber decay.

I also learned that the timber structure has limitations in laying different members, which should never exceed the maximum span of the member. when curve edges are present, trimmer joist or blocking could be used to support the structure and load in that area.

Taking the knowledge of producing construction drawings from the first module, I clearly communicate the dimensions and annotations of the deck working drawings so builders could easily read them. I realize that using proper cross-referencing is important to easily identify how the drawings are used for and where it is located on the plan.

Here I also began to use material hatching in the edge detail, which is also important to identify the different materials used and differing the structural system and decking.

Moreover, I was introduced to how different members are fixed together, such as using blockings and metal plate fixings.
