WALL
Module 1

Reflection
Celebrating the art of brickwork
In this module, we were tasked to design a single skin, continuous 110mm wide outdoor self-supporting and structurally stable wall, with approximately 5000mm long and fit to an A3 sheet at 1:10 scale, which highlights at least one unexpected and intriguing material quality.
Through this project, I learned the techniques and consideration in designing a single skin brick wall which is stable to resist lateral forces, one of which is by applying the rule of thumb. Adding engaged piers or curves in my design strengthen the stability of the single skin brick wall so it doesn't fall when wind is applied.
I also learned how load is carried through different openings. This impacted my final design by having straight edges for the openings and a minimum of three courses on top of the lintel to make the wall stable.

Another lesson is how to read and use clear drawing conventions, annotations and dimensions. For the first module, I develop an understanding of how to dimension a working drawing with curvatures and importance of dimensioning in relation to a datum point.
After the given feedback, I reevaluate to clearly communicate dimensions when needed and not over-dimension to make it less confusing for builders to read.
